Importing Vehicles into Spain

At SCI Spain Car Imports , we specialize in the professional management of vehicle imports and registrations in Spain. We offer a comprehensive service for European, UK, classic, and historic vehicles, as well as those with expired registrations or those in SORN status. Our team of experts will handle all the necessary paperwork, ensuring your vehicle complies with Spanish regulations quickly and efficiently. We pride ourselves on offering a personalized service tailored to each client's specific needs, simplifying the import and registration process. With over a decade of experience in the industry, our commitment is to make importing your vehicle as easy and stress-free as possible.

Our company focuses on obtaining vehicle registration plates quickly. We advise clients on the legal process of importing a foreign vehicle, as required by the DGT (Spanish Directorate General of Traffic). In Spain, this process is called vehicle registration.

We have worked in the automotive industry for over 20 years, are native Spanish speakers, and have a thorough understanding of the Spanish bureaucratic system; however, our multilingual team will be at your service whenever you need it. We speak English, German, Dutch, French, and Spanish.

We have our own mechanical workshop in Almoradí, MD autoZENTRUM , where we can solve any problems, repairs or modifications that your vehicle may need, before passing the ITV Technical Inspection.

The registration process can take between 2 and 8 weeks from start to finish, depending on several factors. If you are a resident of Spain and need to drive your vehicle while the registration is in progress and your 30-day period is ending, you will need to apply to the DGT (Spanish Directorate General of Traffic) for temporary transit registrations. Non-residents can drive a foreign vehicle duly registered in its country of origin for 6 months within a 12-month period without registering it in Spain.

Required documents

For European vehicles:

  • Original registration from the country of origin

  • Formal registration from the country of origin

  • NIE (Foreigner's Identity Number) and Spanish Residence Certificate

  • updated census

  • Spanish Vehicle Insurance (Coverage Note)

  • Vehicle Inspection Certificate (ITV)

  • IEDMT Payment Certificate

  • IVTM Payment

For UK vehicles add:

  • Original V5C, copies not accepted

  • DVLA export certificate

  • Spanish passport or photo ID card

Vehicles registered as SORN – Expired registration plates

Our vehicle registration process is 100% legal. We handle all the paperwork with the DGT (Spanish Traffic Authority), customs duties, and regional taxes. We prepare your vehicle in our own workshop to pass the ITV (Spanish MOT) and take care of the technical inspection. We speak the local language and have a thorough understanding of the Spanish system; however, our multilingual team will be happy to assist you in your own language.

Provisional registrations

The registration process can take between two and eight weeks from start to finish, depending on several factors. If you live in Spain and need to drive the vehicle during the registration process, and the 30-day period allowed is about to expire, you will need to apply for temporary license plates from the DGT (Spanish Directorate General of Traffic). Non-residents can use a vehicle registered abroad for a maximum of six consecutive months within a 12-month period without needing to register it.

New Spanish license plates

We can process and install your new Spanish license plates once your vehicle is registered, even if you need to replace the old ones. The plates are placed on the front and rear of the vehicle, and the original foreign license plates must be removed.

Registration of classic and historic vehicles

Registering classic vehicles can be complicated in some cases; however, don't worry: we will help you with the necessary documentation and guide you through the entire process.

Vehicle insurance

It is mandatory to have, at a minimum, third-party liability insurance. Do not cancel your foreign policy before your Spanish policy is active (which is usually confirmed by a cover note).

Headlight readjustment

Vehicles imported from the UK may require headlight adjustment, adaptation, or replacement. We can carry out all of these operations at our facility before your vehicle inspection (MOT/ITV).
